Ontario-Sired, Windsun Glory, Takes New Mark In Preferred

Windsun Glory surrendered the lead early on but got the last laugh in Friday’s $30,000 Fillies & Mares Preferred Pace at Woodbine Mohawk Park when she came out on top with a new sub-1:50 lifetime mark.

Leaving out from post two, Windsun Glory and Trevor Henry led the field through a :28.1 opening panel before 9-5 second choice Shower Play, the 2018 O’Brien Award winner for her standout sophomore campaign, marched up from third to take over command. The new leader hit the half in :55 and raced to three-quarters in 1:22.2 with 4-5 favourite Kendall Seelster offering up a challenge before leveling off down the stretch. However, Henry tipped Windsun Glory outside off the turn and got up to defeat Shower Play by a head at the end of the 1:49.4 mile. Witch Dali, who was last at the half-mile mark, came on for third-place honours.

Windsun Glory has now won two of her last four starts in the local Mares Preferred for trainer Bill Budd and owner Bruce Davy of Brockville, Ont.

The victory was her 28th lifetime and boosted her bankroll to $478,573.

The six-year-old Mach Three-Windsun Princess mare was sent postward at odds of 9-1 and she returned $20.10 to her backers at the betting windows.
