Ontario-Sired, Waasmula, Wins Woodbine’s $30,000 Fillies & Mares Preferred Pace

Waasmula pulled off an 11-1 upset in Friday night’s $30,000 Fillies & Mares Preferred Pace at Woodbine Racetrack as she tipped second-over in the final turn after a ground-saving trip and defeated favourite Imagine Dragon in a sprint to the wire.

Ms Mac N Cheese (Phil Hudon) crossed to command from post seven off the gate before stablemate Wrangler Magic (Sylvain Filion) looped her at the :27.1 first quarter mark to lead to the half in :56.3. Meanwhile, inside starter Waasmula followed in third for driver Trevor Henry.

At the midway mark, 9-5 favourite Imagine Dragon (Rick Zeron) began to advance first-over from fourth with Delightful Hill (Doug McNair) gapping her cover past three-quarters, which was clocked in 1:24.2. Wrangler Magic, the 3-1 second choice, continued to lead the field into the stretch, but Imagine Dragon went by down the lane with Waasmula rallying to her outside and getting up to score the victory by a half-length in 1:52. Imagine Dragon finished second while Wrangler Magic held off Ms Mac N Cheese for third.

Waasmula returned $24.10 to her backers at the betting windows.

Owned and bred by Brent Vincent of Allenford, Ont., the eight-year-old Million Dollar Cam-Waasmowin mare notched her sixth win of the season from 25 starts while pushing her annual income over $275,000. The 28-time career winner, who is trained by Bruce Goit, is closing in on the millionaire status, with her bankroll now sitting at $982,038.
