Ontario-Sired, Waasmula, Strikes In Mares Preferred At Mohawk

Waasmula and catch-driver Phil Hudon pulled off a 14-1 upset with a late rush in the $30,000 Fillies & Mares Preferred Pace featured on Friday night (May 26) at Mohawk Racetrack.

Brent Vincent’s homebred millionaire prevailed off a three-hole trip, closing in :26 for the 1:52 triumph. Wiggle It J (Travis Cullen) unleashed a :25.4 final kicker and weaved between horses in the stretch to secure the runner-up honours, finishing three-quarters of a length behind the winner. Rounding out the top three finish order, Request For Parole (Ed Hensley) edged out 3-2 favourite Sandbetweenurtoes (Jonathan Drury), who had taken command at the :28 quarter mark and led through middle splits of :57.2 and 1:25.1.

Waasmula returned $30.50 for a $2 Win ticket.

Bruce Goit trains the nine-year-old Million Dollar Cam-Waasmowin mare, who has won 33 times in her career. The victory was Waasmula‘s fourth this year from 14 starts and pushed her seasonal earnings to almost $80,000.

Following the feature, trainer Richard Moreau won three consecutive races. Travis Cullen drove a pair of the winners, Bugatti ($5) and Roselily ($4.30), before Jonathan Drury steered the season-debuting North America Cup eligible Richard Hill ($54.80) to a 1:51.2 new lifetime mark.
