Ontario-Sired Fillies Win Celias Counsel Series At Mohawk Racetrack

Treasure Gifts K and Flowers N Songs pulled off upset victories in Thursday’s divisions of the Celias Counsel Series at Mohawk Racetrack, and that was music to the ears of Bob Key, Paul Reid and Doug McNair.

Treasure Gifts K sped to the front and didn’t look back en route to posting a 39-1 upset for driver McNair. The Reid pupil hammered out panels of :28.4, :58.1 and 1:27.1 before kicking home in :29.2 for the 1:56.3 decision over the John Bax-trained tandem of Miami Magic and race favourite Hills Angel.

Winless in her first 19 attempts, the three-year-old daughter of Deweycheatumnhowe-Andovermetreasure was an impressive winner in the maiden-breaking performance for owner/breeder Key of Leechburg, PA. She’s banked more than $33,000 to date.

That filly’s stablemate, Flowers N Songs, captured the second division in 1:57.4 for the team of Key, Reid and McNair. Unlike her barnmate, Flowers N Songs rallied from far back to stake claim to her victory.

Out the route from Post 10, the three-year-old daughter of Deweycheatumnhowe-Pleasures Song was seventh, sixth and then third through the first three markers before using a :27.4 closing kick to win by 1-1/2 lengths over Windsong Magic in 1:57.4. Race favourite Wanaka shook loose late to grab the show dough in the $16,000 affair.

Sent off at odds of 5-1, the homebred improved this year’s record to 5-3-0 from eight starts for owner/breeder Bob Key of Leechburg, PA. Unraced as a rookie, the talented lass has now stashed away earnings of $46,050.

The $33,200 final of the Celias Counsel Series is scheduled for Thursday, April 28 at Mohawk Racetrack.
