Ontario-Sired, Cousin Mary, Cruises At Flamboro

Off a win against this group last week, odds-on favourite Cousin Mary overcame the assigned outside post and catapulted to an eight-length victory in the $11,600 Fillies and Mares Preferred 2 Pace at Flamboro Downs on Saturday, April 13.

The six-year-old Camluck mare raced fifth of the six as Phoos Girl led to a :27.1 opening quarter. Lyons River Pride, sitting third, initiated the two-wide charge heading to a :57.1 half, supplying cover to Thrillonthebeach and Cousin Mary moving to the backstretch.

Driver J Harris fanned Cousin Mary three wide from third over and swept to the lead past a 1:26 third quarter. By the head of the stretch she owned a six-length lead on Thrillonthebeach circling into second while Lyons River Pride chased from third in the 1:54.1 mile.

Owned and trained by Jeffrey Williamson, Cousin Mary won her fourth race from 12 starts this season and her 25th from 81 overall, surpassing $300,000 in earnings. She paid $3.60 to win.

Following Cousin Mary’s blowout win, Now And Again took the $9,400 Fillies and Mares Preferred 3 Pace by a slim margin over Style Snapshot in 1:55. The Patrick Hunt owned-and-trained daughter of Big Jim cleared command past a :27.4 opening quarter and slowed the tempo to a :57.2 half. However the six-year-old faced pressure on the front as Style Snapshot edged first over and drew within a head of the lead passing a 1:25.4 third quarter.

Now And Again gained slight ground from the inside turning for the wire but Style Snapshot dug into her deficit, ultimately finishing a nose short of victory in 1:55. Twenty Three Red finished third.

Winning her 13th race from 50 starts, Now And Again has earned $69,261. She paid $5.90 to win.
