Ontario-Bred, Donicus, Lowers Canadian Season’s Record At Woodbine

Donicus turned in a career-best 1:56.1 victory on Friday night (April 1) at Woodbine Racetrack to become Canada’s fastest three-year-old trotter so far this year.

The Deweycheatumnhowe-Flying Dove Cafe colt cruised wire-to-wire and defeated older rivals in the $18,000 eighth race trot for non-winners of two races or $42,500 lifetime.

Owned, trained and driven by Eddie Green, Donicus trotted out from post two and led the way through fractions of :27.1, :57 and 1:26.1 before holding off the four-year-old mare Hurricane Hazel, who closed late along the pylons, for a half-length victory in the 1:56.1 Canadian season’s record clocking. Third prize went to the four-year-old gelding Five Below.

Donicus paid $7.20 to win as the 5-2 second choice to 2-1 Kaddy, who tracked closely in the pocket spot throughout and finished just two lengths behind in fifth.

The chestnut colt now boasts six wins and three third-place finishes in 10 career starts for earnings of $46,680. He is also Canada’s fastest sophomore trotter over a half-mile oval this year, courtesy of his two-minute mile over Flamboro Downs during his 2016 debut back on January 14
