From SBOA New Owner to Top of the Heap at the O’Briens, That’s Anthony Wagner’s Story

SBOA heartily congratulates Anthony Wagner on being one of the owners of The Game Plan, recently crowned Canada’s two-year-old Colt Trotter of the Year at the O’Brien Awards.

Wagner was introduced to the ownership ranks through the SBOA’s New Owner Mentoring Program back in 2005. His group owned Lemon Drop, a son of Mr. Lavec that earned almost $98,000 as a rookie trotter. That first taste was enough to hook Wagner and from there the Mississauga resident has proceeded to share ownership in a number of different horses.

“I can truly say that I’m addicted to owning horses, and everything about the horse business,” he’s been quoted as saying.

Wagner owns The Game Plan along with LLK Stable of Mississauga, Gary Grieve of Union and trainer John Kopas. A former $20,000 yearling purchase, the talented Kadabra son won 8 of 13 starts, finished in the top three 11 times, and banked over $490,000 in 2011.

Anthony’s wife Janet has enjoyed her own success story in the SBOA program, having been involved in the ultra-successful partnership behind Grin For Money.

Another of John Kopas’s protégés, Grin For Money was also a $20,000 yearling buy. That pacer went on to win over $322,000 for the group before being sold at auction last fall for $155,000.

Both Anthony and Janet Wagner have been wonderful ambassadors for the SBOA New Owner Mentoring Program.
