Canadian Yearling Sale Average Up 24%

A solid group of yearlings and a 2015 two-year-old purse bonus announcement helped substantially raise the average price at Sunday’s 2014 Canadian Yearling Sale.

Topping the sale was regally-bred yearling Sports Cowboy. The colt, sired by O’Brien Award winner Sportswriter out of O’Brien Award winner Moving Pictures, was sold for $100,000 to Determination of Westmount, Quebec. Sports Cowboy was consigned to the sale by Preferred Equine.

Also garnering much attention from the Preferred Equine consignment was pacing colt Rothwell. The son of two Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Famers — Camluck and Mystic Mistress — sold for $61,000 to Gino Toscani of Mount Hope, Ont.

An enthusiastic crowd was present at the SC Sales Pavilion at Flamboro Downs and eagerly shelled out $1.955 million for the 155 yearlings available, resulting in an average of $12,614 — up 24 percent from the 2013 yearling average.
