It was an extreme case of quality over quantity in Monday’s OSS Gold Series divisions for two-year-old pacing colts and geldings Monday evening at Mohawk Racetrack.
A mere 11 rookie battled in a rich set of $105,000 divisions on the 10-race program, and the newest wave of stars scorched the oval.
Calvin K set a North American season’s record with a 1:52.3 triumph in the first division. Jody Jamieson hustled the son of Classic Card Shark-Road To Pandalay to the lead from Post 4 and together they sliced out splits of :27.2, :56.4 and 1:24.3 before storming home in :28 to win by three lengths over Shadow Rouge. Third prize was earned by Big Bad Bill.
Bred and owned by Winbak Farms of Chesapeake City, MD, the Tony O’Sullivan pupil is now 2-for-2 to start his career. The lion’s share of the loot lifted his bankroll to $59,500.
Sports Column stole that colt’s thunder when he blazed to a 1:52.1 performance in the very next race. Chris Christoforou got away second with the son of Sportswriter-Lady Leslie, but he had him on the move shortly after Happy Trio chopped out the opening quarter in :27.3. Sports Column charged to the top and cruised through panels of :57 and 1:25.1 before roaring home in :27 to win in wrapped up fashion by 1-1/4 lengths over Happy Trio. Classic Pro rounded out the top three finishers.
Trainer Blake MacIntosh co-owns the talented youngster with Hutt Racing Stable of Paoli, PA. The pacer boasts a 1-1-0 record from just two trips postward, and his bankroll now stands at $56,000.
